A Guide on Playing Mega Millions

play megamillions onlineMega Millions is a lottery game in America which is available in 44 states, the US Virgin Islands, and the District of Columbia. It initially began as The Big Game in 1996 and was later on renamed to The Big Game Mega Millions 6 years after. The game has a guaranteed minimum jackpot of $15 million which will continue to grow until won.

How to Play MegaMillions Online

You have two options to choose from if you want to play Mega Millions: play a $1 ticket for the Mega Millions, or a $2 ticket for the Megaplier feature. With the Megaplier, you can multiply your prizes on lower prize tiers. For the lower prize tiers, the Megaplier is shown during the drawing, usually ranging from 2 to 5. The selected Megaplier will be used to multiply the prizes won on the lower prize tiers for that draw.

Before you can play Megamillions, you need to buy Megamillions tickets online first. After purchasing your tickets, simply choose five numbers from a number pool of 75 in the white play area, and one Mega Ball number from a pool of 15 in the lower play area. You can also opt for the Quick Pick option and have the system automatically pick a number combination for you. If you want to have a shot at multiplying your winnings, simply spend $1 more per play by marking the Megaplier option. The cost will be $1 multiplied by the number of drawings you want to play. With the Megaplier feature selected, it will cost you an additional $1 per play per draw.

You can decide to participate in upcoming drawings for up to 26 draws using the same play slip. In order to do so, simply mark the Multidraw box or ask the retailer for multiple draws upon purchasing your tickets. In the event you win a prize with the Multidraw option, you can claim your winnings at a retailer and be given an exchange ticket which you can use for the other draws you participated on.

Keep in mind that once a ticket has been printed, there is no way to cancel it. Hence, you should check your play slip carefully to ensure that you have correctly chosen your numbers. All ticket sales for the lottery game will close at 10:45 during draw days and will resume after each draw.

Draw Information

Mega Millions drawings are held and televised every Tuesday and Friday at approximately 11:00 PM at the studios of WSB-TV in Atlanta, Georgia. However, for even bigger jackpots, the drawings are sometimes held at Times Square. You can watch the live drawings on any of the following stations:

  • WRAL Raleigh
  • WAXN Charlotte
  • WLOS Asheville

Before 2010, Mega Millions was the only lottery game whose drawings were done nationally instead of being broadcasted only in participating regions.

How to Claim Your Prize

In the event you win a Mega Millions prize, you will have a few months or even a year to claim your prize, depending on where you’re from. In some cases, you won’t be able to claim your jackpot in cash if you wait for more than 60 days after the winning draw.

To buy MegaMillions tickets online, you will need to be at least 18 years of age, with the exception of Iowa, Arizona, and Louisiana where you will need to be at least 21 years old. The rules will vary in accordance with the laws and regulations of the area where the ticket is sold, along with your place of residence. Mega Millions winnings don’t have state income tax in California, while the states of Texas, Florida, New Hampshire, Tennessee, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Washington don’t have an income tax. Meanwhile, places such as New York and Yonkers will have to pay three levels of income tax.

In places such as Texas and Georgia, you have the option of choosing whether to claim your jackpot prize in annuity or cash. In the event you can’t claim your prize within the given time limit, the 45 Mega Millions members will get back the money they’ve contributed to the jackpot. Each of them will have varying rules regarding the unclaimed prizes - some will allocate the money for educational purposes, and more.
