A Guide to Playing Powerball Online

play powerball onlineThe Powerball is a lottery game offered throughout 44 states in the US, along with the US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. The game has a minimum advertised jackpot of at least $40 million which is expected to rise to several hundred million with rollovers. The drawings are held on Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 in the evening.

How to Play Powerball Online

Starting October 2015, the Powerball has become an even larger jackpot game with bigger jackpots and improved chances of winning. During each draw, five white balls are drawn out of a drum with a total of 69 white balls and one red ball from a drum with 26 balls.

In order to win the jackpot, you will need to correctly match all five white balls and the red Powerball. In the event you win, you can either claim your prize through annuity which is paid out throughout a span of 29 years, or through lump sum payment. If you choose annuity, you will get an annual payment which increases by 5% each year in order to keep up with the costs of living. Meanwhile, if you go for a lump sum, you will get the cash, pay for the tax, then invest on what is left.

To play, you can either buy Powerball tickets online or from a local retailer. Simply pick 5 numbers from a total number pool of 69 on the upper play area. You can also choose Quick Play to let the system automatically pick a number combination for you. Aside from the main numbers, you also need to pick your Powerball number from a number pool of 26 on the lower play area. Like the main numbers, you can also choose Quick Play by marking the QP box.

With the Power Play feature, you can increase the winnings on lower prize tiers by 2, 3, 4, 5, or 10 times simply by spending an extra $1 per play. To do so, mark the “YES” box under the “Power Play” to choose the feature for all play area on your play slip. For extra convenience, you can choose to play your numbers for several drawings, up to a maximum of 10. You can do so by marking the box under “Multidraw”. Each drawing you take part in will cost you $2.

How to Win

Before the official drawing is conducted by MUSL, a Power Play multiplier will be drawn and displayed during the draw wherein five from a pool of 69 numbers plus a Powerball number from a pool of 26 numbers are selected randomly. There are nine ways of winning Powerball prizes by simply matching the winning numbers in the official drawing. By matching all five numbers along with the Powerball, you can win the jackpot prize. Lower prize tiers can be won by simply matching five numbers and below.

All of the Powerball prizes, with the exception of the jackpot, are paid in fixed amount. The jackpot prize will be split accordingly to all winning tickets. It could be paid either through annuity or a one-time payment in the form of lump sum. If no one managed to win the jackpot, it will roll over to the next Powerball drawing. If you win a Powerball prize, you should claim your winning in the state where you purchased your ticket. Also, you must claim your prize within 180 days after the winning draw date.

Options for Claiming your Prize

buy powerball tickets onlineIn order to determine how you’ll get paid in the event you win the jackpot prize, you will need to choose your payment option at the time of purchase. For annuity payments, mark the “30 Annual Payments” box to receive your prize in 30 annual installments. Keep in mind that the payments are not equal, as each payment will increase every year.

If you want to receive your prize in lump sum payment, mark the “Cash Value Option” box in order to claim your prize in a single payment. The amount you get will be less than the advertised jackpot because it is based on 30 annual payments. Moreover, there is no way of changing the preferred payment option later on. If you haven’t selected any payment option, your playslip won’t get accepted. The jackpot prize is pari-mutuel and will be split equally among the jackpot winners. The jackpot prize that is advertised is basically an estimate, and you could end up receiving less amount based on the actual sales.

Jackpot History

Throughout the Powerball history, there were a few huge winners who were able to claim massive winnings. It was on January 13, 2016 that the world’s largest jackpot prize, amounting a total of $1.586 billion annuity, was divided among 3 Powerball tickets, with each ticket receiving $528.8 million each.

However, the single largest jackpot to be won by a single ticket was an annuity of approximately $590.5 million back in May 18, 2013. The winning ticket was purchased in Zephyrhills, Florida and won by Gloria MacKenzie who bought a “Quick Pick” ticket.

Other winners of more than $250 million were on December 25, 2002 by Jack Whittaker who won $315.9 million. Whittaker has chosen the lump sum payment of $170 million, and received $83 million after Federal withholdings.

The Powerball is regarded as one of the largest multi-state lottery in the US which is offered across 44 states, along with the US Virgin Islands and the District of Columbia.
